Tioga

7 months
This sweet girl is a stocky black lab we acquired through Kellygreen Labs in Nevada. Growing amazingly fast, she will soon reach the age of 8 months. Tioga has caught up to Bailey and Jackie (find out more about them in earlier posts) in weight and stature. She is on her way to being a beautiful dog.

3 months

Tioga has learned many tasks to keep her busy, some of which are: basic obedience, scent training,  bringing the meter (a diabetic's blood sugar meter), and we will soon start her on getting a juice out of the fridge on command.

Tioga has also gone many places in public such as the Feed Store, grocery store, clothing stores, schools, a huge public event, and many others. Last week she even went to the Civil War!  She didn't even flinch as the cannons boomed, but the little boy in a funny hat did startle her. She has done very well at all of the places she has visited.  Her attitude has always been one of complete calm, surprising for such a young dog. She stays under control and is such a good girl when young children run up to pet her without asking.  This young dog is 'bomb proof'!!  Nothing bothers her.  A pan could fall next to her during a deep sleep and she would barely open her eyes.

Tioga is a sharp girl that we are very proud of. She loves to work and is very happy to do whatever is asked. This girl is a great dog and we are very proud of her.

Dog Books

There are many reading sources on the market concerning dogs, dog training, dog breeding, dog health, and many other things pertaining to dogs.  We have found some great books that we wholeheartedly endorse. Two of our favorites are both written by a lady who been in the dog training arena for over 40 years~ Debby Kay knows what she's talking about when it comes to scent training!  The Super Sniffer Drill Book is a great book if you want to do any kind of scent work with your dog.  The other, The Super Sniffer Hand Book is geared more towards training medical service dogs.  Both of these books are very reliable and we use them every day in our training.

If you are entering the dog breeding circles there is another book by Debby Kay called The Labrador Breeders Handbook that is a great addition to your bookshelf.   Dog Breeders Professional Secrets is another great book for your breeding program, it is very informational and interesting.

However, not many people are going to need these books for their bookshelf.  Most dog owners are just wanting a well-trained dog that minds its manners and can do a few cool tricks.  So far our favorites are written by the Monks of New Skete. They have written some great books about creating the best home for you and your dog.  They teach many things about training and raising puppies and dogs.  Smellorama! Nose Games for Dogs is also a very fun book to entertain you and your dog.

Enjoy your puppies this spring season!!!!

Treating a Low Blood Sugar

When a diabetic is experiencing a dangerous low blood sugar there are times when they are unstable on their feet.  At times like this, the diabetic can have their Duty Dogs DAD get something to help bring their blood sugar levels back up.  In this example, we show Bailey, an 18 month DAD from Duty Dogs, retrieving a juice from the fridge for a 10-year old boy.
